Hopeful technology

Most technology is designed for the user it fears.

Users who will abuse it.Attention that must be captured.Trust that must be extracted before it disappears.

What if you started from the other assumption?

Hopeful technology starts from the other assumption and keeps the receipts to prove the assumption still holds.

Cynicism is cheap because it costs nothing to hold. You can predict decline forever and never once be caught wrong before the world ends anyway. Optimism is expensive. It has to keep being right, in public, on a schedule.

Hopeful does not mean cheerful. It means being willing to make real design decisions on the assumption that people, given a fair tool and an honest interface, mostly do right by each other and themselves.

Defaults that assume you'll be fine

Visible price. Easy cancellation. Generous defaults. Trust people until reality gives you a reason not to.

Interfaces that expect competence

Accessible does not have to mean condescending. The person on the other end will grow into the tool.

Optimism with an expiry date

A hopeful assumption that cannot be falsified is a slogan. Every act of good faith here comes with a number that would have to move if the bet stopped paying.

Built slowly enough to be sure

Hope is not haste. Build at a pace where you can actually tell.

What are you afraid the user will do?

What would you do if you weren't afraid of them?

How would you know if your trust was misplaced?

If that happens, change the design because reality changed your mind. Not because fear got there first.
